Pay Filters

Pay filters are among the most important filters that affect any career.  Your CDL driving career is no exception!

"Money has no grey areas.  You either make it or you lose it."  Kevin O'Leary (Shark Tank)

You can see by the sample flowchart that income is n0t only determined by Cents Per Mile, but also the NUMBER OF MILES DRIVEN!  Being paid $1.50 a mile means nothing if you don't drive the required miles.

As a new driver it is important to understand at first you won't drive as many miles as experienced drivers.  This is particularly true during your several weeks hands on over the road training with your first company.   That doesn't mean you can't reach your money goals. Learn from your training more than just how to back up and fill out a logbook. Use your coaching to make the kind of money you want in the shortest time with plans, goals, and action.

As a CDL-USA member you will set goals, take steps to reach the goals, and learn how to work with your first company and trainer to share your goals and plans so you can have a long-term mentor and mutually beneficial career goals.

Example filter flowchart: Cents Per Mile (CPM)

  35 CPM = per day = 5 day week = 4wk mo =  52 wk yr

   400 mi = $140 = $700 = $2,800= $36,400 (17.50hr)

   500 mi =   $175 = $875 =$3,500 = $45,500 (21.88hr)

  600 mi = $210 =$1,050 = $4,200 = $54,600 (26.25hr)   40 CPM

    400 mi =  $160 = $800 =  $32,00 =  $41,600(20.00hr)       500 mi = $200 = $1,000= $4,000= $52,000 (25.00hr)

    600 mi  = $240 = $1,200 = $4,800 = $62,000 (29.81hr)

   45 CPM

    400 mi  =  $180 = $900  =  $3,600 =$46,800 (22.50 hr)

     500 mi = $225  = $1,125 = $4,500 =$58,500 (28.13 hr)

    600 mi  = $270 = $1,350 = $5,400 = $70,200 (33.75 hr)

  50 CPM *

     500 mi = $250 =$1,250 = $5,000  = $65,000 (31.25 hr)

8hrs/day @ $20 hr = $800/5 day wk = $41,600/52 wk yr

                       $15 hr  = $600                  =   $31,200

                       $10 hr  = $400                  =   $20,800

                *$31.25 hr  =$1,250 wk          = $65,000 yr

Types of Filters

The goal of a career is getting a good job.  Your first step towards that goal is deciding what you think is a good job for you.  Know yourself, know your options, and know where to look for answers.  Your personal filters help determine this.  There are basically three types of filters:

1.  Mandatory (these are usually industry "laws")

2.  Corporate (determined by the "employer")

3.  Personal (determined by you and your goals)
